Belgium's Bold Stance: A Step Toward Justice and Sovereignty for Israel

We Believe In Israel (WBII) welcomes Belgium’s recent decision to join Hungary in rejecting the International Criminal Court's (ICC) warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This important move signifies a shift in international attitudes toward the application of legal measures against Israeli leaders and challenges the continued politicisation of international legal institutions. The ICC’s decision to pursue such warrants against Israeli officials has long been a point of contention, as it fails to account for the complexities of Israel’s ongoing security situation and the nature of its fight against terrorism. Israel, like any sovereign nation, has the right to defend itself against forces that seek its destruction. The legal frameworks and accusations leveled against Israel often fail to distinguish between defensive actions taken to protect its citizens from terrorism, and the baseless allegations of war crimes often made by Israel’s adversaries. Belgium’s stance, in alignment with Hungary’s, further underlines the necessity for fairness and objectivity in international law. The selective prosecution of Israeli officials, as evidenced by the ICC’s disproportionate focus on Israel, undermines the credibility of the institution and its claims to impartiality. This recent rejection is a step in the right direction toward restoring trust in international legal processes, and reinforces the need for all nations to uphold their sovereignty and stand against politically motivated legal actions. As Israel continues to face existential threats from entities such as Hamas and Hezbollah, the international community must recognise that the fight for security is a fundamental right, not one that should be criminalised. WBII commends Belgium’s courageous decision and urges other nations to follow suit in ensuring that international law remains a tool for justice, not a weapon for political agendas. We stand firmly with Israel, its leaders, and its right to defend itself against all forms of aggression—be it on the battlefield or in international courts. Israel’s security and sovereignty must be respected by all, and its leaders must not face unjust legal actions based on distorted narratives or politically motivated manoeuvres.
